Posted By: Maureen Date: Wednesday, June 7 2006, at 10:37 p.m.
In traditional Chinese medicine, ginko biloba was used for asthma and other respiratory problems. The remedy from history came from an extract from the ginko seeds. It wasn't until the 1950s that the leaf of the ginko was studied for uses in herbal medicine by German researchers. There are very different uses that came from these studies and, in fact, ginko has come to be known for helping very different ailments.
The principal uses of ginko biloba are for mental function, mostly with age-related memory lose, dementia, or Alzheimer's disease. German scientists believe that ginko is as good of a treatment for these problems as any conventional drug regimen.
