Eucaliptus trees cover 75% of the Australian landscape it is said. The part of the tree that is used to make the herbal remedy is the leaves. The essential oil of eucaliptus can be extracted from the leaves and is a common ingredient in lozenges for colds and coughs, vapor rubs to sooth the membranes in the lungs through inhaling the vapors, and in teas to fight infection. It is the tannins in the eucaliptus that help reduce inflammation in the throat.
The cautions on safety of eucaliptus should be taken seriously, as directly ingested pure oil can result in nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is also contraindicated for people that have liver or gall-bladder disease.
