Australian Eucaliptus Oil

Australian eucaliptus oil was distilled from the leaves of the eucaliptus tree for commerical use as early at the mid-1800s. There are several species of the eucaliptus tree used for oil production, but the ones with a crude oil content of 80-88% cineole are the most effective and of the highest quality. The Blue Mallee species or Eucalyptus polybractea is the best at producing this quality oil.
The concentrated oil has warnings that come with it in all literature. The pure eucaliptus oil can be toxic if ingested as well as harmful to the eyes or mucous membranes if directly contacted. The oil should be diluted in water, a carrier oil such as canola or almond oil, or used as a steam inhalation. Most products that include eucaliptus, such as lozenges, have a very small amount.
