The key constituent in eucaliptus oil that gives it healing properties is called cineole or eucalyptol. In order to be effective the plant leaves must contain 70 to 85% cineole. Cineole stimulates blood circulation near the point of application on the body and is therefore helpful in treating sprains, bruises and sore muscles.
Cineole is also important for reducing pain and inflammation and there is some scientific evidence that shows that cineole can kill leukemia cells.
