Steevia

As an alternative sweetner, steevia hit the market big. Perhaps most people did not even stop to wonder about the origins of this sweetner, thinking that it was yet another laboratory concoction to make sure we didn't get fat. But steevia is the common name for the plant from the Aster family, or Stevia rebaudiana. People of Paraguay and Brazil have used steevia throughout their history as a natural sweetner.
There do not seem to be any healthful benefits to steevia other than being able to sweeten our lives without the calories of sugar. Japanese scientists have found steevia to be very safe, but the FDA has not approved the use of steevia to use in foods, nor is it on the GRAS list (generally regarded as safe).
