The chemical formula for tee tree oil, or more precisely the constituents that are in tee trea are volatile oils, terpinen-4-ol, gamma-terpinene, alpha-terpinene, and cineol. The terpinen-4-ol is the constituent most noted for its antiseptic qualities. The cineol, however, is an irritant to skin. The quality of tee tree oil is based on the amount of cineol in the oil. Poor qualities of tee tree oil contain more than 10% cineol and can have as much as 65%.
Using the species alternifolia of the Melaleuca genus is the best way to ensure a better quality product. Other species exist but they have higher precentages of cineol.
