In Response To: Tee Tree Oil Use (Maureen)

The use of tee tree oil can be harmful if the full strength essential oil is ingested excessively. This is normally the case for essential oils, since they tend to be concentrated preparations of herbal remedies. Essential oils are usually safest when diluted in water, oil, or cream.

Tee Tree oil can also be used with domestic dogs. The diluted oil has been used in creams as an arthritic rub and as an antiseptic for skin problems, much like a human would use tee tree. Repeling fleas is another popular use of the herb, but remember that cats' kidneys do not process essential oils the same as other animals. Cats can be much more susceptive to concentrated preparations of herbs and tee trea, especially, has been reported as a particularly toxic herb to cats.
