Ginsing seed has been an important commodity both in Asian and American for hundreds of years. Early Native Americans harvested ginsing to improve the body's stamina and increase mental function. The Chinese have done the same, though with different species, for an even longer period. Interestingly, the American history of ginsing is amazing - kind of an old west story of wranglers and stealers. The proper terms are poachers, really - as the plant was put on the Endangered Species list in some states, the price was pushed up due to the age old captital system of supply and demand. One source says that ginsing agents will even dye the roots in order to track them after being poached. The thieving is usually done on the land of professional ginsing growers. Even in the new millenium, new legislation is being set up to protect these farmers from having their cash crops depleted.
