Tumeric seems to have constituents that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties. One often hears about Curcumin which is one of these constituents and is called a polyphenol. In one study at the University of Arizona by Dr. Clark Lantz, they have seen in one experiment that tumeric components may be helpful in preventing arthritis flare-up, for example. Other constituents seem to be even more important for anti-inflammatory action. Tumeric is suggested as an arthritis anti-inflammatory preventative by this doctor using 250-500mg extracts two times a day. But he points out that its best to use an extract of the rhizome (lateral roots of the plant) and not just the curcumin. As for Crohn's disease, there seems to be evidence that curcumin helps block the cellular mechanisms that lead to the pathogenisis of the disease. It's a good idea to search out clinical studies that have been done and take a look at their results section. Note the sample size to be sure its sufficiently large as well as the demographics, if possible, to know whether its representative of just a certain group of people.
