The part of the ginsing plant that is used in herbal medicine is the root. It can be used raw or by processing it. The ginsing plant can be used in several types of preparations: raw, infusion, tincture, pills. An infusion is similar to tea and usually refers to using the more delicate parts of a plant like the leaves and flowers in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. A decoction usually refers to using the roots or bark of a plant, but the ginsing plant root does not necessarily have to go through the 20-30 minutes of simmering as most sturdy plant parts. A tincture is made by soaking an herb in alcohol for up to two weeks. This is a stonger preparation which one would use a less quantity of and it also has a long shelf life (up to two years).
