My verdict is still out on using black cohash and other herbal supplements that contain estrogen-like compounds for use in reducing menopausal symptoms. And the reason is because - it's still out for the rest of the world. There is scientific evidence for and against the idea that black cohosh has constituents that act like estrogen and thus can promote growth of breast cancer cells and encourage metastasis of these cells. In fact, there are articles discussing its estrogen activity and others showing that it does not have estrogenic activity - how can I know without having my own laboratory! I think there are women that benefit from black cohash and other phytoestrogen supplements, but the results showing the possible negative outcomes leaves my mind unsettled. So, I'm on the fence saying, "weigh your pros and cons". How bad are your symptoms? And you *are* already on HRT? I would so some serious research as well as have a sit down with my gyn.
