Aniseseed herb is native to North Africa, the Mediterranean, and western Asia. The parts of the herb that are used for medicinal purposes, as well as culinary, are the leaves and fruits. It is in the parsley family and looks very similar to the aerial parts of parsley. It is often used in Chinese and Indian foods, with fennel being interchangeable with aniseseed. They have similar tastes, as does star anise, which has the same constituent as aniseseed, anethole, which lends them their flavor.

Star anise is often used in place of aniseseed for baking and for making liquor because of this gustatory similarity and because it is cheaper. It also has some similar medicinal benefits like aiding in digestion and colic.
