Aniseseed had been used for thousands of years; it had a long history of use in Egypt where the fruits and leaves were used as a diuretic and toothache remedy. Aniseseed is useful for bloating and gaseous situations, often being used to treat children suffering from colic (meaning a spasm of the gut that causes cramping and is often seen in young children after eating - note that for children the dose is reduced to 1 teaspoon of herb per 2 cups of water to create the decoction/infusion and only giving up to 2 cups per day).
Because of it's antispasmodic properties, aniseseed can be useful to treat menstrual cramps and asthma, as well as spasmodic coughs since it also has expectorant qualities. One caution about aniseseed is about it's essential oil - it should not be taken orally or during pregnancy except in flavoring foods.
