Alo Vera plant

The alo vera plant part that is used to make the well-known gel comes from the secretions of the leaves. This is what is used for topical healing, as well as internal remedies. The skin of the leaves can be used, as well, though as a very strong laxative, that in any literature I've encountered is not spoken of as if it a good thing to take. I have only seen scant evidence that the skin is used.

The gel can be used internally for purgative reasons, as well, though it seems that it is not very strong. I would probably stick to slippery elm bark for aiding digestive problems. Otherwise, there is not too much mention of trouble when using the alo vera plant, though there is a contraindication for liver or kidney patients.
