Herpies sores can be extremely itchy and annoying - using a natural herbal remedy can be effective, safe, and less costly than prescription medications. A herb that comes up time and again when talking about healing and even preventing herpies sores is Melissa officinalis, also called lemon balm. The polyphenols in the leaves are strong antivirals. In one study, the time between outbreaks was increased and the sores healed much faster. Importantly, it is also a calming herb, which everyone knows is important when dealing with herpies since stress will bring out the beast.

Lemon balm can be expensive when buying the straight essential oil. One useful alternative is a cream called Cold Sore Relief by Enzymatic Therapies. It is marketed as a remedy for facial cold sores, but it can also be helpful with genital herpies, as well.
