Hodia

Okay, so the new herb for the millenium is hodia. Wouldn't you like to know the politics behind that? It always amazes me when I find out how we know something or what events took place before we know something. "We" meaning the average person in the world. Anyway, hodia is a plant native to Africa, namely Angola and Namibia. It is used traditionally as an antiinfectant and digestive aid.
In the mid-90s, pharmaceutical companies tried to extract and replicate the active appetite supressant called P57 within this herb. They eventually gave up, indicating that it was not an easy task and that there was evidence that hodia could negatively effect the liver in a way that they could not prevent after their research.
But then the hype set in as hodia became available as a food supplement with no supportive research into its safety or effectiveness. Basically, hodia works by the shear will of all of its marketing. So beware - it may well have some medicinal application, but unless you have a connection to the San of south Africa who now have the rights to receive a profit from the sale of hodia, you may not really know hodia's effectiveness or, indeed, it's dangers.
