Ginsing is indigenous to northeastern China, eastern Russia and North Korea. I was surprised at the cold climates to which this plant is a native. So, hook up with your local ag association online, or visit the nurseries in town - those folks will know if your north sided mountain forest has the extremely rich and moist, yet well-drained soil needed to grow ginsing.
There are some spectacular websites where folks describe in detail how they grow their ginsing. An important item that has come out of some research is that the ginsenosides that come from the ginsing and offer so many of its medicinal properties increase in concentration with the increase in size of the ginsing root. So, more effort is being made to study how to influence better root growth to maximize each ginsing plant.
The Asian, or Panax ginsing, seems to be the most touted and sought out. American ginsing, or Panax quinquifolium, is second runner up as it does not seem to have the same stimulating properties as its brother. Siberian ginsing, or Eleutherococcus sentiococus, seems to have similar properties to Asian ginsing.
