There are several interesting benefits of cammomile in the posts in this string. Perhaps I didn't stress enough how useful cammomile can be in helping sooth the stomach, as well. This herb has been taken as a digestive aid since the 1st century AD. Its seen as a safe herb to help abdominal pain, bloating, and indigestion, even in children.
The volatile oil of the cammomile flowers relaxes the smooth muscles of the stomach and colon. It helps to regulate peristalsis which is the contraction of muscles in a wavelike motion that moves food through the digestive tract. The motion and relaxation of the digestive tract is what helps optimally obtain nutrients from the food. A little help from cammomile during stressful periods may aid in this process, as well as countering the underlying anxiety with its relaxing qualities on the nervous system. Stress can induce extra acid in the stomach and overcontraction of the digestive system, so cammomile can have a two-fold beneficial effect.
