Its really quite fascinating what effect Steevia has had when you read about how the FDA has tried to keep it out of the United States market. Its great reading, really, because if you look between the lines, you just know there is a political agenda going on. Or I believe so, anyway.
Again, it has been used for thousands of years by the Guarani Native Indians of Paraguay and Brazil for treating intestinal problems and wound healing, as well as a sweetener. 40% of Japan's sweetener market is taken up by Steevia and its widely used in the other Asian and European markets.
Studies are not conclusive, or maybe just not done very well, to indicate whether steevia has mutating effects on living cells. There is evidence of this when used in a petri dish sense in the lab, but not in vivo, or within a living being like a poor little rat they may use in a laboratory. Let me interject at this point that I stand firm that even for the health of myself, my family or my friends, I do not believe that humans have the right to use animals as laboratory subjects.
Anyway, since the evidence still remains unclear, the FDA still limits labeling of steevia as a food additive, but does allow it imported as a food supplement. Does this protect the sugar cane farmers and other sweetener producers in the US? You decide.
In the meantime, we can keep a close eye on the Japanese who have used the product for decades and see if there are any effects. I guess no one wants to trek to South America and do their studies there. Regardless, maybe more arguments can be made for or against its use once these users are studied.
It is presently reported as a very healthy and non-toxic alternative to sugar and carcinogenic synthetic sweeteners. It has little effect on blood-glucose level in humans, and its been used medicinally to treat high blood pressure and obesity.
