Yukka plants are numerous; there are about 50 species native to North America. It was a very important food and medicine source for Native Americans. It was traditionally used to cleanse the blood, induce vomiting, cure baldness and treat dandruff and relieve arthritis. It was also used practically to make soap and textiles. The saponins in the yukka plant seem to be responsible for increasing beneficial flora in the digestive tract and inhibiting bad bacteria so it is able to help rid the body of toxins, thus its noteworthiness as a detoxifier. This seems to be the root of the cause of preventing inflammatory illnesses since it is often toxins that lead to bodily inflammation.

Yukka does not seem to have any serious side effects though it can cause diarrhea in some people. It is generally not used for long periods of time since it can interfere with the body's ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins.
