Using a licorish stick is usually a helpful method of helping with indigestion. There are other preparations for licorish, namely as a tincture, powder, decoction, or a fluid extract. The powder is often used to place on canker sores and help heal them through its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. The others can be used to treat peptic ulcer, constipation, and gastritis. The root is the only part of the licorish plant that is used to make these preparations.
Traditionally, licorish is used to also treat chest problems as it can be a demulcent and expectorant. An expectorant helps eliminate mucous from the respiratory system, while a demulcent helps relieve inflammed membranes.
