The gingko leaf is the main part of the tree that is used in herbal preparations. The seeds are also used in preparations in China, but mostly for wheezing symptoms or urinary tract problems. The gingko leaf can be steeped in boiling water for 15 minutes to make an infusion that will increase blood circulation to the brain. This increase of blood correlates with an increase in oxygen which helps improve mental functions like memory and coordination. It can also help with migraines by improving vascular tone and keeps blood vessels from leaking chemicals that cause inflammation which is what causes a deficiency of blood which can create migraines.

Studies have shown that gingko is effective in treating 80% of the people with headaches. The recommended dose is 40 mg extract capsules, taken 2 or 3 times per day.
