In Response To: Fenal for Pain (Maureen)

Fenals may be a term attributed to a group of herbs that seem to have similar properties, namely fenal, caraway and anise. All of them are usually recommended for digestive problems and as antispasmotics to ease stomach pain. Fenal, however, is also purported to be a remedy for colicky children. Studies in India showed that after being given fenal or a placebo, the children that took the fenal remedy had a significant reduction in colic symptoms.

Fenal can also help nursing women. It is taken as an infusion to increase breastmilk. It is also suggested as one component in an infusion for helping a woman after a caesarean section; the other herbs in the recommended infusion are raspberry leaf (uteran contraction), partridgeberry (regulate hormones and uteran contraction), nettle (milk production and needed nutrients), oatstraw (builds stamina), and lemon balm (relieve nervous tension).
