Fenal is a useful herb both in the kitchen for culinary dishes and as a medicinal aid. Fenal is an antispasmodic which means it can ease tense muscles in the body. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why it may be seen as helpful for pain. In general, literature does not tout fenel as a painkiller, but it does suggest it for a lot of different digestive problems that are painful, like bloating and distention.
Fenal extract has also been used as an eyewash. It is antibiotic and can help ease diseases of the eye by combating the disease as well as relieving some painful symptoms. An interesting historical note is that fenal was seen as a cure for witchcraft - it would be neat to know why exactly this was believed.
