Don quai seeds grow into a 6 foot tall plant. The plant part that is used to make the herbal remedy is the rhizome, or thin roots that run close to the surface of the ground. The rhizome is used to make capsules and powders to market for healthy living. The roots are also chopped finely and added to cuisine like vegetables and chicken.

Don quai plants are still cultivated in the Asian world, mostly China and Japan. Here, the rhizome is incorporated into substances that can be injected into acupunture spots in order to relieve pain.
