Hypothyroidism may be treated successfully with conventional prescription medication. However, research has shown that these medications can lead to health complications especially in women. They lead to a lower bone density in the hips and spine, as well as other side effects having to do with creating an imbalance in the production of thyroid hormone. Radioactive iodine treatments and sugery also come with their share of potential side effects. Treating hypothyroidism with herbal suppliments does seem possible with some research and help from a practitioner.
It is common with herbal medicine to go through a detoxification period first so that the slate is wiped clean, almost; so that the body isn't inhibited by toxins.
The process continues by using herbs that supplement the body with iodine since this is what is needed for thyroid hormone synthesis. After that, herbs that stimulate the endocrine system are suggested. And finally, a strict diet is recommended to ensure a balance can be met within the body.
