Communities in the Middle Ages relied mostly on local natural healers that did not have any practical knowledge of conventional medicine from cultures around the world, but apprenticed to understand illness and how local plants were useful to treat them. However, there was much knowledge of these herbal remidies especially in monasteries. By the 12th century trade with Africa and Asia increased the knowledge of the western world with the influx of new herbs and spices.
By the 14th century, trade routes had expanded such that herbal supplies were great and such plants as ginger, cardamom, nutmeg and turmeric found their way to Europe from China and India. Then Columbus brought back important herbs from the new world, like antimalarial and antismallpox remidies.
