Wilde Yam
Posted By: Maureen Date: Monday, July 3 2006, at 6:40 p.m.
Though wilde yam was never used historically as a contraceptive aid, a constituent of the root called diosgenin was important for formulating the first contraceptive pill. This substance was also useful in developing modern medicinal cortisone. Wilde yam is known to relax muscles, to work as an anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic, as well as serving as a diuretic. It is the diosgenin that acts with the anti-inflammatory properties.
It was historically used by North and Central American native peoples as a pain reliever, often for menstruation and labor. Today it can help arthritis, muscle cramping or tension, and digestive problems.
