The horse chesnut tree lends its leaves, bark and seeds for natural health remedies that aid the circulatory system, specifically the venous system. The tree is native to a large area of Asia, from the Balkans to the Himalayas but is now a regular site as an ornamental shade tree throughout Europe. The seeds, especially, yield a concentration of extracts that can help with leg ulcers, vaircose veins, piles, and frostbit. The extracts have also been used in the middle east to treat chest problems in people and horses; the leaves are used for this preparation.
Horse chesnut is an anti-inflammatory and astringent, so it may also be useful in treating rheumatism and has been used as such by making a lotion for topical application.
