The spearamint plant produces volatile oils that can be used in herbal preparations. Though spearamint is often seen as a weaker remedy than peppermint (peppermint is a cross of spearamint and watermint), spearamint oil can be helpful when symptoms are mild. Spearamint is not as overpowering as peppermint in my opinion. Spearamint may be useful in relieving migraine pressure. Taking an herbal tea preparation is the recommended way to help with migraines - 2 or 3 cups a day of hot water simmered with fresh leaves or 2 or 3 drops of spearamint oil dissolved in the water.
The oil can also be used by placing a couple drops on the temples and the back of the neck to help dispell the pain of the migraine.
