Fenegreek is a native plant to northen Africa and other countries bordering the Mediterranean. Traditionally, fenegreek was used to stimulate uterine contractions and aid in birth, as well as milk production. Fenegreek seeds are also used to sooth gastritis and other digestive problems, as well as reduce fevers as it acts similarly to quinine. Fenegreek may be antidiabetic and help lower cholesterol, and act as a healing herb for external wounds and sores.
Modern research shows that fenegreek may have anticancer properties as shown in liver studies with rats. The seeds are the part of the plant that are used for all of its medicinal preparations.
