Research evidence for aromatherapy can be as simple as records on papyrus by the Egyptians, clay tablets from Mesopotamia, to present day scientific studies on the different plants that lend us their oils. Distillation of essential oils was being done in 500 A.D. by many countries througout the world and became a "new" interest in the early 1900s when a French chemist healed his hand in a jar of lavender oil after a chemical burn. But arometherapy is more specific than just using the oil of an herb like any other preparation; arometherapy is specific to the millions of tiny aromatic molecules that give the herbs their smell.

Some aromatic oils can affect the chemicals of the brain when inhaled. Research has shown that different aromatic oils can relieve pain, heighten memory recall, affect a person's behavior and affect sleep. Interestingly, arometherapy can also have effects because of fragrance associations; our brains may associate some smells with certain things and change our behavior or thoughts this way.
