Difference between Xylitol and Stivia

Fascinatingly enough, both xylitol and stivia are excellent sugar substitutes, but for different reasons. A constituent of stivia known as stevioside is 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, but without the added calories - thus its a great sweetener without the side effects to the hips. There are no scientifically proven medical reasons for using stivia.

However, xylitol, which is popular throughout the world, especially in Finland, seems to have numerous benefits. Xylitol is a natural substance, as well, and is taken from birch, raspberries, plums and corn. It does contain calories but not like sugar. Also, there is evidence that xylitol prevents tooth decay and other tooth problems. It may even help deter ear and upper respiratory infections because is inhibits bacteria from adhering to the upper respiratory tract. Finnish scientists have even found xylitol to be useful in preventing weakening of bones and may improve bone density.
