The botanical name for dong qui is Angelica sinensis, thus the common name of Chinese Angelica. There is also an American angelica or A. atropurpurea, and a Eurpean angelica or A. archangelica. The American angelica has similar properties to dong qui but the Eurpean angelica is not a blood tonic like the others. It can aid in stimulating the circulatory system, however. This may mean that it does not have the high levels of iron that the others have, since dong qui is so important in conditions of weakening related to anemia. But that's an educated guess.

All three of them probably help improve the circulatory system because they have blood thinning capabilities. This, in turn, can aid in digestion as well as healing since blood carries in the useful white blood cells for this purpose.
