Boswellia serrata seems to be a historically important herbal remedy for anthritic conditions. It is also noted as an effective antiseptic and astringent and so is helpful to use is taking care of the mouth, gums, and throat. Literature points to boswelia serrata as helping to relieve inflammed mucous membranes in the mouth by gargling, relieving sore throats, laryngitis, canker sores and gum disease. This is proably due partially to the anti-inflammatory properties of boswelia serrata but an astrigent is something that constricts or has a binding effect. So they are useful to stop discharges and secretions, as well as to reduce swollen tissue.
The parts of the boswelia serrata plant that are used in preparations are the gum resin and bark. It is cultivated in the central and northern regions of India.
