Scullcap is often used in conjunction with other herbs that help the nervous system. Valerian in one of the common partners of scullcap. One source suggests taking 3 caps of each herb every four hours for serious nervous anxiety. Tea is also a recommended preparation using 1 tablespoon of valerian to 1 pint of water, simmer for 30 minutes, then add 2 teaspoons of scullcap and simmer for another 10 minutes, strain and drink every few hours.

The scullcap is added later because the more tender parts of the plant are used in preparations, like the leaves and stem. The valerian must be simmered longer to penetrate the tough root material.
