Scullcap

Scullcap is often used for anxiety and nervousness. The species used for these indications is actually European scullcap, or Scutellaria lateriflora, as opposed to Chinese scullcap, or Scutellaria baicalensis. Scullcap has been used in traditional European and Native American medicine to relieve nervous tension and aid with sleep. It is often used in conjunction with other calming herbs as it does not have a strong effect on the nervous system.
There is not a large amount of scientific evidence for scullcap's uses. There is also not a lot of research on the safety of the herb. Overdoses may lead to serious sedative effects or possibly liver damage.
