The yuca plant can actually refer to a variety of species. Many of these are native to the southwest United States. This was an important plant in Native American cultures, both for its medicinal properties and its usefulness like making needles and as a dye for fabric or yarn. Historically, the yuca plant was used in Native American medicine to relieve pain and inflammation due to bad joints and arthritis. It was also used as a general tonic and detoxifying herb for the liver and kidneys.
The leaves and the roots of the yuca plant are the part used to make herbal preparations. Oftentimes, the leaves are used to heal external wounds, while the roots can be boiled for tea.
