Yuca

Yuca is a desert plant with an apt name of "Guardian of the Desert". It may be the guardian of the human body, as well, since it is purported to aid in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in the human body. Studies have shown that the fresh flowers of yuca contain anticancer fighting compounds. However, as soon as the flower dies, the compound is no longer effective.

Fortunately, extracts of the flowers have been studied and have had inhibitory effects on cancer so maybe it will only be a matter of time before science can harness the power of this yuca constituent and we do not have to rely just on the fresh flowers. Since yuca is adapted to the desert environment, flowering can occur with a decade in between occurances.
