Black cohash is often indicated for use in relieving the symptoms and uncomfortable conditions of menopause. Used for centuries, modern research has shown validity for the useful effects of the herb. In one study, black cohash along with St. John's wort was effective in treating over 75% of women for hot flashes. Black cohash seems to have some properties that mimic estrogen; for example, it inhibits a pituitary hormone that rises significantly during menopause.
German studies show that black cohash is not only effective in treating hot flashes, but sweating, vertigo, headache, heart palpitations, tinnitus, nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and depression.
