Ashwanganda can be effective in the human body in many ways. It is seen as a tonic herb, which means it generally strengthens the body. It can do this for the elderly and infirm. It can also relax the overworked or anxious by effecting the central nervous system. It even seems to have restorative effects for the sexual system, perhaps because it is so useful in combating the effects of long term stress on the body which normally weakens sexual drive and performance.
Ashwanganda seems to be a safe herb to use when following suggested dosages. There has not been extensive scientific research done on its safety for children or pregnant/nursing women. It can have steroidal effects, as well as sedative effects which come with certain cautions.
