In Response To: Ashwaganda (Maureen)
Ashwaganda root is the part of a plant used often in the Indian healing therapy of Ayurveda. The ashwaganda plant, or Withania somnifera, is actually a shrub with greenish flowers and a peculiar smell. The plant grows well in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and is often called "Indian Ginseng" due to its purported properties similar to ginseng. In fact, the active ingredients in ashwaganda are similar to those in ginseng.
The roots are not the only part of the ashwanganda shrub that are used. In fact, every part is used in herbal remedies.
