There are many different fibers and the definition for fiber has not always been an easy thing to come across (catagories of fiber were being hashed out as early as 2001). Psylium and inulin are two types of fiber, but placed in different catagories, functional fiber and dietary fiber, respectively. A functional fiber is one that synthetic and used as a supplment, while dietary fiber is naturally occurring in foods normally eaten.
Inulin fiber occurs naturally in onions and Jerusalum artichokes. While the term psylium is used in the dietary world to denote specifically the mucous produced from soaking the husks. They are both soluble fibers. Inulin is refered to as a prebiotic - it helps the growth of healthy colonic bacteria. It also increases calcium and magnesium absorbtion in the system.
