The alow vera plant is actually native to an island off the horn of Africa called Socotra. Interestingly, Socotra was invaded by the Greeks because of this highly valued plant. The Greeks wanted the plant for its purgative or cathartic properties, meaning it was useful as a laxative. Preservation efforts are under way on Socotra in order to maintain important native species that may prove as important to medicine as alow vera is.
Modern scientific studies show that alow vera works by moving into damaged tissue to promote healing. Alow vera increases blood flow and thus new red blood cells which house a human's natural healing substances as well as help relieve inflammation. Alow vera can even act as an analgesic.
