When using herbal medicine, especially without the aid of a trained natural healer, always include the cautions in your research. The side effects of astragulus, for example, include mild gastrointestinal discomfort or allergic reactions. There are also cautions listed against using astragulus during serious illness or if one has ongoing skin disorders. Perhaps the latter is the case because astragulus is a vasodilator which means it encourages blood flow to the skin surface and this may increase inflammation in skin disorders. No information is given as to why astragulus should not be given during acute illness, though it seems to be information passed on from Chinese Traditional Medicine and could be a worthy caution to note. Otherwise, the side effects of astragulus are listed as low. Some research indicates that astragulus is a diuretic which is another trait to keep in mind when considering using an herb and how it may effect the body.
