The root of the astragulus plant is used when making a preparation for medicinal application. The root may be used in combination with other herbs for different remedies. A decoction is made by simmering the chopped root for 20-40 minutes and straining the plant matter. This can be taken 2-3 times a day per standard dosage.
For anemia, combine 1/2 ounce of astragulus and 1/2 ounce of chinese angelica (or dong quai) in 3 cups of water. For stimulation, add some honey just to the astragulus and drink between meals as astragulus encourages blood flow. Use cinnamon with the astragulus decoction when fighting a cold with numbness.
