Echinecea

Echinecea describes more than one species of plant. In fact, it is my understanding that the more components of one's preparation that come from all the different echinecea species, the better. Individual constituents have been studied to see how they effect the viruses and bacteria and why this herb can work against these bugs, but its a combination of these compounds that seems to work. This is what is refered to as synergistic herb where different chemicals actually work together to produce the herb's greatest effects.
Echinecea is native to the United States and 3 main species are used: E. angustifolia, E. purpurea, and E. pallida. When looking at commercial products, try to find the ones that combine all the different parts and plants in one product - the flowers of E. purpurea are used, as well as the roots of all three species.
